HUMANITARIANISM - Does it truly exist?

Has this word evolved and now takes on a more "contemporary" meaning, as so much of our cultures have evolved and taken on a "new" image, some to a greater extent than others.

But this word "humanitarianism"- has it remained the same, the same meaning as it was always meant to be. After I wrote the above, I looked up the Wiki meaning of humanitarianism. It says:

"humanitarianism is an ethic of kindness, benevolence and sympathy extended universally and impartially to all human beings. Humanitarianism has been an evolving concept historically but universality is a common element in its evolution. No distinction is to be made in the face of suffering or abuse on grounds of gender, sexual orientation, tribe, caste, age, religion, or nationality."

Are we then allowed to choose parts of this description to describe ourselves as a humanitarian?

Is segregating any part of this description allowable and still be considered a humanitarian?

If not, then how do we describe ourselves?

Or is it a goal? If it is, how do we get there?
