According to old school, a company can get its competitive advantage from low cost, quality or innovation (there are more sophisticated variations and rewordings, but this simple framework still is good start to think about strategy).
Most people agree, that Western European, Japanese and North American business units competing globally, cannot compete on cost any more.
More and more people agree, that it's getting tighter on quality as well.

So, innovation is the only thing that can keep them in the market. Scary thought.
