Is social media crippling us socially?

I may have touched on this topic before, but has social media affected our ability to relate to one another and develop personal relationships? It always alarms me when I enter a public place and see dozens of people all plugged into electronic devices without speaking. What is it that is causing us to become more distant from personal social interactions?
