Landlord refusal to give back deposit

I have presently found a new/larger apartment and have given my present landlord 30 days notice and they will not give me back my deposit and several months of prepaid rent. The lease states 30 days notice to vacate. Registered mail sent of notification to vacate and still refusal to refund my money. Advice please before this gets out of hand.
