Living in San Francisco...

sounds great - before you realise you need to find the right area AND apartment to live in.
Any do's or dont's when looking for a place in SF? I experienced in the UK that double glazed windows are a must and carpets everywhere is a no go.
What do you think of The Presidio, Marina, Pacific Heights, Cow Hollow, Russian Hill, North Beach and Telegraph Hill?
I look for a safe but lively area where I can enjoy the weekend with a nice breakfast in my favourite cafe close to my apartment, go out at night having some restaurants and bars in walking distance and being able to go for a run or take the bike for a little tour after work. To much to ask for?
I look for Protected content from Oct '11-'13.
Cheers
