Miss Japan: First mixed-race winner provokes debate

Protected content

I had dinner with British friends a few weeks ago and they were adamant that one cannot be of Indian/ Pakistani heritage (the example given), ethnicity and call themselves English.
No matter how many years and generations later, they will never accept this.

Internations Events were mentioned as an example that if you clicked on "Canada", you'd be hard pressed to find someone who looked or sounded like a Canadian...

Could Venezuela accept that the Miss Venezuela, could be of Chinese descent?
Must one look like the Protected content of that country's citizens, to qualify as an authentic representative of that country or is this definition changing?

What then do contests like Miss Universe or Miss World, start to mean or look like?
Curios.
