Nikon or Canon?

Hi Internations,

A friend of mine coming from America.As digital cameras are ridiculously expensive here in Istanbul, I thought may be I can order one from US.
I want to shoot professional photos in Istanbul and also if you know some cameras with HD video feature that would be great.
I was thinking to buy from ebay, is it logical?
I'd be grateful if you can advise me on brand name, model and etc.
