Our children’s citizenship

Choosing to live abroad has repercussions for our children. We should check out citizenship regulations before giving birth in another land, so that we can make informed decisions. Canada, for example, allows the first generation of children born abroad to become Canadian. However, the second generation born abroad (our grandchildren) are not accepted. Or, our children could be trapped by arcane laws. For instance, *certain Canadian residents who were born abroad are suddenly being stripped of their Canadian citizenship without warning, because they hadn’t applied to retain it before the age of 28.

These are just some examples of the pitfalls our offspring may face due to our decision to live elsewhere. We can help them by staying informed.
