Paternity Leave: For real?

Is paternity leave really necessary?
If so, for how Long should companies grant new fathers time off?

Is that time off really being well utilised or should these extra days that companies have to spare be diverted to mothers?

Four months includes breastfeeding, a woman's body somewhat getting back into gear, etc?
What is the guy doing for four months?
