Population Control

It seems to me that we are drifting towards a big problem. The population of the world is growing very fast but the world and its resources stay the same size. If we continue like this then surely the average quality of life must, at some point, reduce as things start to run out. Those who can't afford the prices, that must rise with demand, will suffer if not starve. To just let this happen seems grossly negligent.

Do we have too many people already? If not, then what is the limit?

How can we stop the growth? A Chinese style "one child policy"? A child tax? Rewards for small families?

Do we need to act at all or should we let nature take its course?

I would be interested to hear other people’s thoughts.
