Questions about German Visa (Married Couple)

I apologize if I'm going about this the wrong way, I am new to this site. I am looking for information on visas for Germany. My husband and I would like to move there and potentially go to school or even settle longer term. We plan on learning at least basic (or better) German before we leave (in about 2 years).

He runs his own freelance business, and I suppose he'd apply for a freelance visa (not sure of the actual name). We have enough $ to support us for several years.

My question is, would I be able to accompany him with this visa? I cannot seem to get a straight answer anywhere. I do not want to be separated. What do I need to do?

EDIT: We are both American citizens, just to clarify.
