Should Britain apologise for past atrocities?

For those who complain that I only pick on the US/NATO Empire for its war crimes...

I have mixed views on apologies for historical wrongs, however nasty they were. On the one hand, they have symbolic value: on the other, they are a cop-out. On balance, I favour the symbolic value, and I would formally apologise for Britain's imperial atrocities if I were Prime Minister. (Mind you, the apology would probably be rejected, as long as the current NATO atrocities are going on; so now is not the most convenient time for Sri Lanka to bring the matter up...)
