spanish retirement

hi everone,my wife and i are looking to retire in spain,buying a property.we will be travelling to spain later this year to have a look around.after contacting the spanish embassy in wgtn. they advised me that to retire in spain we would have to show an income of Protected content per person per month,which is around $ Protected content . seems a lot.can anyone advise on this please. thanks rick.
