The most spied-upon people In history?

The below link from Washington's Blog (USA) makes an alarming claim. I find it hard to believe that "the averaqe American" has as little privacy as the writer reports, but I would be interested to hear from InterNations members living in the US what they think of it. I have a cousin in Australia - a lawyer, one of the good ones! - who worries about the quantity of information his government is accumulating through communications networks; could it be even worse in the US?
