The race of Jesus

Am I the only one who gets annoyed by Jesus being depicted as white guy with light brown hair?

He would have looked like the other people in that area at the time - dark skinned with black hair. I think someone would have mentioned it if he had looked like a western European. I suppose you could make the same point about Mary.

I can forgive this in history but why do we continue to do this when we know better? Is it racism? Some strange idea of tradition?
