Not sure which category to post this to, just read the recently posted article about trailing spouses.
When we moved from the US to France 20 years ago, it was indeed on my work contract and my wife did not get a work visa immediately (although she did receive one later when we changed residence status). It's a shame that your article only focused on work and stay-at-home with only a passing mention of volunteer work.
In our case, since we were able to live well enough on one income, as soon as our daughter was well-adjusted enough to not require 24/7 attention, my wife immediately looked for volunteer opportunities to apply her skills and interests. She is sufficiently fulfilled by these activities that they have become her "career" (it seems to us that not everything has to be remunerated to be satisfying!).
