USA and Armenian genocide?

Can someone explain me why the USA, with all problems they already have, spend their time discussing now about the Armenian genocide of one century ago?

Do they want to piss off one of the few muslim moderate countries who still supports them or divert people's attention from other bigger problems?

I don't want to say that the issue is not important, but there may have been more suitable occasions for this statement, for example when Orhan Pamuk was about to land in jail for his opinions... but why now?
