Visiting Beijing for a Week

Hi! I'm traveling to Beijing for my first time in August for a week.I'll be staying with my father, he's got a few things planned for the evening outings but since he'll be working all day I'm looking to venture out and about on my own. I would love any tips and suggestions about what not to miss (and perhaps to miss!) as a solo wanderer "about town". Any great cafés, relaxed bars, restaurants and of course great touristy destinations all will be appreciated.
