What makes you respect someone?

I guess with so many different cultures, tradition, upbringing, education we define and view respect differently.

It would be interesting to know what you think of respect in general. Do you respect someone just because he/she older than you? your superior? has better education? wealthier?

I personally believe that respect is not come automatically just because that person is wiser, older, richer, smarter, etc. I do believe that a person need to earned a respect and not expected it just because all the above. What do you think?
