When I first learned the botanical name for Sweet Wormwood – Artemisia Annua, I was as fascinated as I’d been when I read a book about a painter, many years before. Artemisia Gentileschi, was an Italian baroque painter, today considered as one of the most accomplished painters in the generation following that of Caravaggio. In an era when women painters were not easily accepted by the artistic community or patrons, she was the first woman to become a member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence.

She painted many pictures of strong and suffering women, from myth to the Bible – victims, suicides and warriors. That she was a woman painting in the seventeenth century and that she was raped and participated in prosecuting the rapist, long overshadowed her achievements as an artist. For many years she was regarded as a curiosity. Today she is regarded as one of the most progressive and expressionist painter

If we go back to Protected content ., we discover yet another female protagonist with the same name – Artemisia was the ruler of Halicarnassus (near today’s Bodrum, Turkey) and it’sand its neighboring islands, part of the Persian Empire then ruled by Xerxes. When Xerxes went to war against Greece ( Protected content ), Artemisia brought five ships and helped Xerxes fight the Greeks in the naval battle of Salamis. The Greeks offered a reward of 10,000 drachmas for capturing Artemisia, but no one succeeded in winning the prize.

Artemisia is a name that’s imbued with surprising qualities such as unexpected strength, the ability to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles and endure against all odds.

This is certainly true of Artemisia Annua as the most effective remedy for drug-resistant malaria today.

I was born in Italy and lived in South Africa during the former apartheid regime. I was privileged to shake Nelson Mandela’s hand and bid him farewell on December 5, Protected content . I am now back in my native land, after a long tenure as a communication and media specialist for corporate multinationals.

It’s time for me to listen to the workings of my heart. It’s time for me to use my creativity, fire and resolve for a good cause. It’s time for me to farm Artemisia Annua in Italy extract arteminisin and save lives.

And that’s just the beginning. I’m a qualified ILS Master Coach. I am a writer. I am a dreamer. It’s also time for me to transfer my skills to those who will see the sunrise, long after I have gone – and live to cultivate other dreams. Help me save those dreamers.
