What to do and where to stay in Santiago de Chile?

Hi my friends,
I'm visiting Santiago de Chile at the end of January and I'd like to know some of your experiences there. Is some of you have any ideas about cheap accomodation near the center of the city I will be really grateful. About the city I'm interested in historical sites and cultural and art activities as well. I know I can google to have that info but I'd like to know something you have experienced there.
