Why must you respect beliefs?

I often hear that you must respect the beliefs of others. Why is this the case? Why does a belief hold some special status above any other thought?

If I meet someone who believed that the world was created by god Protected content ago, I would not respect this because there is very little evidence that this is true and a mountain of evidence that it is not true. This point of view is not worthy of respect, calling it a "belief" should not change that.

There are people who believe that crop circles are created by aliens and some who believe that the moon landing were faked. There are Protected content religions who believe different things so they can't all be right.

I am not saying that we should go out of our way to be insensitive but we shouldn't allow people to get away with nonsense simply because they call it a "belief".
