Security and family life in Yaounde (Yaoundé)

Thinking of moving with preteens to Yaounde, but reading some stern security advice. Any advice from people with family living there and in Cameroon generally (North excepted)? We currently live in a fairly secure environment and may not have our street smarts about us. Any thoughts welcome.
