Royal Palace of Gödöllő

The Royal Castle of Gödöllő (Grassalkovich Castle), which we are going to visit, was built in the Protected content by Antal Grassalkovich, one of the most significant chiefs of the 18th century and a confidant of Empress Maria Theresa. The expansions of the complex were continued until the Protected content completing it with the theatre hall - the only reconstructed Baroque theatre in Hungary - and the riding school, and the French garden.
The castle had many illustrious guests. Among others, Maria Theresa visited the castle in Protected content Prince Windisch-Grätz had his headquarters here in Protected content .

After the victorious battle of Isaszeg on 6 April Protected content , Lajos Kossuth and his family celebrated here. The castle enjoyed its second heyday during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was bought by the Hungarian state, and from Protected content was converted into a royal holiday residence, and its interiors are still reminiscent of that period. Franz Joseph and Queen Elisabeth received Gödöllő and the castle as a coronation gift.
