Marlon Brando broke through in Elia Kazan's film adaptation of Tennessee Williams' masterful play 'Ascension to Paradise'. His distinctive blend of sensitivity and raw sexuality hit the spot in the early Protected content . The female protagonist, Vivien Leigh, arrives in New Orleans to live with her sister and her husband, Brando. She has a past that she is trying to run away from - and her relationship with her brother-in-law sparks, so the screen is about to go up in flames! The film's raw, realistic tone and repressed sexuality were too much for the censors. Kazan had to go through a long struggle to 'save' it, and it ended up being nominated for 12 Oscars, won 4.
