GDAŃSK - day trip to European Solidarity Center & Museum of 2WW
I would like to invite you to the day trip to Gdańsk and its newest museums, the European Solidarity Centre (opened in August Protected content the Museum of II World War (opened in March this year) on the 9th of December.
The European Solidarity Centre is a museum and a library devoted to the history of Solidarity, the Polish trade union and civil resistance movement, and other opposition movements of Communist Eastern Europe. It is the only museum in Poland honoured with The Council of Europe Museum Prize Protected content , which has been awarded annually for 40 years to museums that have made significant contributions to the understanding of Europe’s cultural heritage. According to the jury of the prize, the ESC is "a fascinating example of a cultural institution working to promote freedom and solidarity" and "the events it recounts and its programme make it a forum for contemporary Europe."
More information about the ESC and its permament exhibition you will find under the below link:
"Built on land on ul. Wałowa donated to the museum by the city of Gdansk, the Museum of II World War finds itself facing out onto the Motlawa river, hemmed in by the Radunia Canal and yards from the symbolic Polish Post Office building on Pl. Obrońców Poczty Polskiej. The museum grounds cover almost 2.5 acres, while the building covers 26,000 square meters. The building is divided into 3 spheres, which reflect the connection between the past, present, and future: the past — the underground, the present — the square surrounding the building, the future — the leaning tower with the glass façade and ceiling reaching up to 40.5 meters. The architectural conception assumes that the entire evil of the war is hidden under the ground, and the ‘light’ of hope reaches within through a crack that runs along the square. It is the crack that forms the compositional axis of the entire concept of the placement of the main exhibition. It links the interior of the building with the world outside. In total there are over 2,000 exhibits on display spread over 3 narrative blocks: ‘The Road to War’, ‘The Horrors of War’, and ‘The War’s Long Shadow’. This is divided into 18 thematic sections, which is reflected in the layout of the exhibition rooms."
