Dr. Santiago Benjumea offers this free live seminar "From animal psychology to human psychology: Knowing man from the knowledge of other animals".
In our talk, we will start from a fundamental premise: humans are nothing more than an animal species that shares with other animals the same set of principles or general laws of learning. The differences in cognitive abilities between species are due more to questions of content and quantity of what is learned than to the mechanisms by which we learn. Exaggerating, we could say that the rest of the animals "reason like us, but draw their own conclusions."
In this talk we are going to make a brief foray into the history of the psychology of animal learning. We will present a series of classical experiments on the subject that can serve as exemplification of complex cognitive processes that were traditionally believed exclusive to the human being, such as decision making, symbolic thought and communication, consciousness and problem solving and intelligence. . And, from these experiments, we will be able to turn our eyes to human beings, wondering what is behind these terms.
