Ideas Exchange: Us vs Them – Tribalism
An American president once said, “I could kill someone right here in the centre of New York and they wouldn’t do anything to me”. He was referring to the fact that he would be forgiven for everything by his supporters, everything just to keep belonging to the tribe he is heading.
We are living in unprecedented times, more humans than at any time during our history can read, write, and have formal education. However, when we are tasked with making political decisions, passing judgement on a possible criminal or explaining the root cause of everything that’s wrong with the world, many people rely on tribalism, idealising their ethnicity, party, football team, etc.
Why does this happen in our enlightened times? Is there a remedy, or are we destined to always have to choose between left and right, black and white?
We’ll get together and with coffee or other beverage in hand talk to other human beings that are as passionate as ourselves about finding answers.
Some subjects we’ll touch on:
• The need for simple answers in a complex world
• Why do we keep on forming tribes?
• Mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion
• Divide et impera – the source of political power?
• Constructing non-tribal structures – how and what with?
Upon finishing the get-together, we will have gained a deeper understanding of human tribal behaviour and proposed solutions to remedy their manifestation in the modern world.
