Mononoke: Miyazaki’s Magic
Mid-July is the time when Denmark closes for summer holidays, and only tourists wander the streets of Copenhagen. Those of us who stayed in the city may feel pretty lonely despite the sun and the luscious green colour around us: we need to find sources of inspiration and joy. One reliable source I know is Hayao Miyazaki’s magic. This Japanese master of storytelling in animation is the only animation producer who has earned an Oscar for his contribution to the art of cinema.
Miyazaki’s worlds unite organic and mechanical elements; they are filled with whimsical flying devices and living creatures. His characters are never just good or bad. They are alive and evolve along the storyline. Powerful villains can both become miserable and show mercy. His depiction of nature’s wild powers serves as an organic metaphor for our own unconscious drives and existential challenges.
I am inviting you to enjoy Miyazaki’s film Princess Mononoke shown at Gloria – a tiny old-school cinema tucked away from the passersby’s gazes in the heart of Copenhagen on Rådhuspladsen.
This event requires either some knowledge of Danish or boldness to explore the film based on the visual language only: it is shown in Japanese with Danish subtitles.
