Through the Olive Trees by Kiarostami Pre-View + Zoom Debate
What is respect and love for a woman? You will find disorienting to see that an illiterate stonemason with no license, who lives in a desolate village of peasants, destroyed by the earthquake, is more civil on these concepts than many grown-ups and ill-educated European men on the topic. Once again an intense masterpiece that comes to life from the rubbles of the earthquake, like a very delicate flower that grows between the narrow inlets of an arid rock. The struggle of a poor homeless lover to win his beloved woman. The obstinacy of genuine passion and the purest feelings. A film within another film (Truffaut-style narrative device a la "Nuit americaine"). The long final sequence shot in a very long field, alone is worth the whole film, an image of rare beauty and poetry ! Some comments from great directors on this film:
“A ray of hope” Emir Kusturica
“an excellent film by one of the greatest directors in the world” Quentin Tarantino
“you just have to go see the Kiarostami movies to understand that they are just wonderful” Akira Kurosawa
V.O. FARSI-PERSIAN subtitled english
