VPN --- China cracking down . . . or not? (Beijing)

I am heading to China from San Francisco in six days. I am looking into getting a VPN before I go.
Is this something I can establish in China?
Also, I hear that the Chinese government has been cracking down on VPNs. Has that affected anyone's service?
Finally, any carrier recommendations?
