Areas to Live in Edinburgh

Hey all

So, I'm picking up my life and shipping over to Edinburgh in 3 days from Sunny Brisbane...should be a piece of delicious pie.

I'm a pretty active guy, 29, enjoying all varieties of sport, fine cuisine (or a half decent meat pie), the odd drink, a good coffee (I make my own at home anyway). I'm also keen to get into cycling around some of the smoother roads in the area, although my bike's 3 months off.

That being said, I've picked up a job for an engineering firm near the Edinburgh Airport, about 500m from Ratho Station.

Does anyone have recommendations on areas to look at living in - I'll be looking for shared accommodation. And I'll be relying heavily on public transport. I'm trying to get a feel for what areas may be affordable, convenient/fun, with access to shops etc. If it's relevant, i'll probably be looking to spend in the vicinity of £ Protected content month.
