InterNations Grenoble Event /TT May Day
Get ready for an evening full of creative emergencies and unexpected adventures! How many people can you save with your special skills?
Will you be the hero or heroine everyone needs?
Did you know that ...
The distress call "Mayday" comes from the French phrase "m'aider" — short for "venez m'aider", which means "come help me" or simply "help me."
History:
In the 1920s, when aviation and radio communication were becoming international, a standard distress call was needed that could be easily understood by English and French speakers (the two most widely used aviation languages at the time).
Frederick Stanley Mockford, a radio officer at Croydon Airport (England), coined "Mayday" around 1923 for this exact reason: it sounded like the French "m'aider" but was easy for English-speaking pilots and crews to say and recognize.
Official Adoption:
It was officially adopted as the international radiotelephony distress call in 1927, and it remains so today.
Let's play a fun game where you can help others in imaginary emergencies!
And celebrate a hopefully beautiful May day :))
