InterNations Canberra August Meet in Tilley Devine's Loving Arms
Tilley’s café in Lyneham, Canberra, opened in 1984 by Paulie Higgisson, quickly became a nightlife icon with its film noir-inspired ambiance and a surprising turnout well beyond its 60-seat capacity. Named after the notorious Sydney madam Tilley Devine, it was pioneering in offering a safe, inclusive space—banning groups of men unless accompanied by women—to promote a respectful atmosphere, sparking both controversy and loyalty. Tilley’s led social innovations as Australia’s first licensed outdoor venue and pre-emptively banned indoor smoking. Over two decades, it earned renown as a serious live music venue, hosting celebrated international and Australian artists in quiet, distraction-free shows by suspending food and drink service during performances. Tilley’s remains a beloved, trailblazing Canberra landmark with a lasting legacy of social progress and artistic excellence.
So, bring your appetite, smile, and warmth to an evening of meeting present and new friends. We will look forward to meeting you all on 20th August.
