InterNations Pretoria: Carnival Dress Up Event
The roots of celebrating Carnival go back to the Middle Ages.
Germans and other nations like the French celebrate Carnival (Karneval, Fasching, Fastnacht) as a final, wild party before Lent, with roots in pagan winter-driving rituals and Roman festivals, incorporating satire, community, and a farewell to meat and merriment, especially vibrant in the Rhineland with parades, costumes, and mocking authority figures.
It's a joyous release, a cultural tradition of inversion where social norms are temporarily suspended for feasting, parades, music, and satirical commentary, particularly strong in cities like Cologne, Düsseldorf and Mainz.
The German Carneval Association is celebrating it's 40th year - no doubt it will be filled with entertainment and laughs for a taste of what Carneval is about the next time you visit Germany, France or other parts of Europe.
Please send me a message if you are planning to join. Helau 🎉
