Things to do in Bali (Jakarta)

First time to Indonesia, and plan on heading over to Bali in a few weeks. I've done some reading and it seems people are 50/50 on where to stay, I hear Kuta is a great place to stay, but its not very nice? Anyone ever been to Bali and could recommend on what to do for a few days while there and where to stay? Anyone planning on going anytime soon? Thanks for your help
