One of the highest homicide rate in the world (Jamaica)

My research show that Jamaica has one of the highest homicide rate in the world - mostly drug related, as I understand.

So how does one deal with that kind of 'threat' on a daily bases?

Is there an area/s city that is safer than others?

Jamaica looks great AND my wife and I do not want to have to be constantly looking over our shoulders for drug dealer, etc.

Any comments - suggestions?
