Best area to commute to Canary Wharf (London)

Hi, we are a family of four and got used to South African dimensions of space, so when we are relocating, sooner or later, we are looking for some nice towns/villages to live in a Protected content house with garden and short commuting time to Canary Wharf. We heard of Surrey as well as Kent. Any preferences or other recommendations? Thanks for any opinion!
