Where shall I live??? (Los Angeles)

Hello all! I'm Ellis, I am training to become a professional Salsa dancer, Next year I will move to California! :)

Where shall I move to that is either between LA and Irvine? OR in LA but easy to get to Irvine?
(Irvine for my boyfriend's job) and (LA for my dancing)

If we did not own car, Is LA best? What transport would be available to Irvine? How long would this take? Or like I said, is there somewhere in between both cities we could live but us both using public transport?
