Is it necessary to "desparisitarse"? (Quito)

Hi everyone,
My family here in Ecuador has been telling me that it's a good idea to take medicinas desparasitantes, which are medicines to rid your insides of amoebas, parasites or bugs that you can get from the food here. They say that it's a good idea for expats and locals alike to do this every 6 months, especially if you've had food poisoning, which I have had twice since living here.
Has anyone heard of this? I would like some other opinions (from expats and Ecuadorians alike) about whether this is actually necessary, if you have done this, etc. Any information would be great.
Thanks!
