How to get involved in conversation during event (San Francisco)

Hi, I am Linda, I am kind of shy person when meeting new people. Any of you the same? How you start joining conversation with people in the event? Just in and introduce myself? I do not like to be formal and awkward. It might be silly questions but I really want to make friends in this community. Thank you
