Moving to Sao Paolo (São Paulo)

Hi Everyone...I just joined InterNations, and I'm excited about meeting other Americans living in Sao Paolo. I'll be relocating there in September, and I hoping to gain some insight and advice on a few things. The media I see of Brazil shows a dire, extremely violent and lawless situation. I'm not new to traveling, so I always like to hear from people on the ground living there. Anyway, as Americans (or gringos in general), do you feel safe in Sao Paolo? I'm a 6'3 Blond guy so I imagine that alone will attract unwanted attention (from the ladies is okay haha). I just want to enjoy my new adventure feeling relatively safe and secure. I was looking into apts in Jardins and others next to the big park (I can't remember the name). Does anyone else live in this area? What are your thoughts in general? Thanks so much in advance. I'm really excited to be part of the community.
