Auto insurance for US registered vehicle in Europe

I've had insurance through AIU / AIG for my US registered vehicle in Europe for a few years. I wanted to renew a few days ago, but was told that AIG is no longer offering or renewing auto policies for US registered vehicles abroad, and could not advise me what to do. And evidently Geico and Clements both go through AIG. One person at AIG told me that it was the Delaware Insurance Commisioner (that is where AIU is based) who made the decision that AIG could no longer offer insurance for vehicles outside their area of registration. I am somewhat skeptical of this answer, but so far it is the only one that an industry insider has offered.

Ultimately, my question is: what does someone do who wants to ship their car overseas for the purpose of driving it around on an extended (6 month or more) holiday?
