Cats seem to have a bitter sweet presence in society. In ancient Egypt, cats were regarded among the gods, and many other cultures have extensive superstitions regarding cats. One set of superstitions goes on to talk about people who kill a cat (inadvertently or not), would have to atone by offering elaborate prayers etc. On the other hand a cat crossing the street (before you do) is supposed to bring bad luck.
