Double taxation - US citizenship

Hello, I have a dual US citizenship but never lived, worked or paid for taxes there. I've been made aware that I still need to file taxes even though I work in the UK and already pay taxes here. Does anyone know if this is just a formal act or if I indeed need to pay even more taxes there? The financial jargon on the government website doesn't really help me much. A case study would be good.
