Support for Natural disaster relief and recovery

Organizing letter of Mocha cyclone natural disaster relief and recovery for the cyclone-affected victims in Arakan State

On Sunday 14th May Protected content the beginning of the afternoon time at one pm to 8 pm, the powerful Mocha cyclone hit the mainly northern part of Arakan state, the consequence of which was that the entire northern part of Arakan state was devastated, and destroyed across the Arakan state. Approximately 1.8 million people in the Arakan state were believed to have been worse affected by the powerful storm and more than 400, Protected content , including hospitals, schools, Buddhist temples, roads, and infrastructure as well as agricultural land fields and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps were completely damaged. More than four hundred people are reportedly dead and hundreds are still missing.
Arakan state is a fragile state, more than 75 percent of the population is in poverty which is almost double the national rate of 35 percent making it one the poorest states of the country. All of the communities in Rakhine suffer from poverty, poor social services, and a scarcity of livelihood opportunities.

Protected content is very rich in natural resources especially hardwood timber, oil & gas, agriculture, and fishery resources. The old and new successive central government and Burman military authorities harvested billions of dollars by selling gas to China. Despite being rich in natural resources there is no electricity rather appears to be a dream for Rakhine people in the 21st century. And where it is accessible in urban areas, the cost per electric unit is still very expensive: it is 10 times greater than in central Burma and other cities in Myanmar. Rakhine people feel that they are always marginalized and suppressed by the central Burman government. Rakhine (Arakan ) people remain unindustrialized with 75 percent of the poverty line according to the UNDP report in Protected content .

Moreover, in the last few years intensified fighting between the Myanmar military and Arakan Army has been a civil war outbroken into a humanitarian crisis, the fact that thousands of people have been internally displaced in their land in the northern part of Arakan state. More than a hundred local Rakhine civil societies and other INGOs have been taken care of as humanitarian assistance in the Arakan state. However, thousands of IDPs are still in dire need of basic food and medical supplies, the majority of which are women and children. With “grave concern” without urgent humanitarian action, their lives will be at risk.

Once again in the aftermath of the Mocha cyclone, the northern part of the Arakan state situation is very critical. Cyclone-affected victims of 1.8 million now desperately needed humanitarian aid for daily survival and to have temporary shelters in  the rainy season in Arakan state in Myanmar.

Therefore we the people of Arakan from exile cordially plea to the International community to urgently support humanitarian assistance to our cyclone-affected victims in the Arakan State.

With respectfully

Than Soe
