Traveling in EU!!!

Does any one know if i can travel in EU without passport. I live in Germany, and I have german student visa, but for my semester abroad i need to apply for Hungarian Long term visa and embassy will keep my passport for a month for visa process...so during that period if i want to travel to Italy will it be ok without passport???
