What was the purpose of Obama's tour?

I wasn't necessarily thrilled with Obama's recent visit overseas because I couldn't find any reason for it. I think his time would have been better spent campaigning here in the U.S. It was a nice gesture, but it served no real purpose and it could very well backfire on him. What do the rest of you think?
