When an attention seeking is bad?

It is normal to seek attention from others. The existence of social media have expanded the attention seeking need to random strangers on the internet. It widens marketing without border. It made our search (housing, hobbyist, dating, handyman, taxi) easier without the need to engage agents by advertising and sharing knowledge.

It seems convenient and cheap. But when is it toxic? Gone were the days of polite requests from and thank you to a stranger. A well-known writer received rude remarks from a stranger because she did not entertain his request to read his social media posts.
Young people or entrepreneurs expect a businessperson to call them back soonest (when they are not a confirmed client), and immediately rejects them.
Man and woman seeks attention for many reason-some can be selfish. Some for needing a help. Some need a listening ears. Some for seeking advise. It gets toxic when no real relationship is built but for benefit. Discussion will revolve around him/her, focus about the good points and there is shallowness without care for others.
What would you do and what do you think?
