Outdoor Living and High Quality of Life

Brunei is split into four regions, but most expats will head for the Brunei-Muara district and the country's capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. With an equatorial climate, the outdoor life is embraced in Brunei; water sports such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and sailing are all popular. Active expats can take part in badminton, golf, and cycling, or enjoy a slower pace in the museums, national parks, or on a relaxing boat cruise. Expats in Brunei account for approximately 40% of Brunei's population and as such, English is widely spoken as the primary language for business and education. Those living in Brunei will enjoy a high quality of life with excellent healthcare and low crime rates. Of course, as a strict Islamic country, Westerners are advised to ensure they are fully aware of social rules before relocating. The economy in Brunei is thriving and is almost entirely centered around the oil and gas industries, which account for 90% of the country's GDP. Education is an alternative option for expats, with English the language of instruction from primary to tertiary education.

InterNations is the largest global network for expatriates, with communities in 420 cities around the world. It was great to meet some other people from Austria here in Brunei through InterNations. It feels a little bit like home.
